In the midst of the snowstorm, Milton and I decided to step out in support of Claire Sulmers and her popular fashion blog FashionBombDaily.com. Held at the nightclub Mr.H in the Mondarian hotel in SoHo, the music was better than ever thanks to rapper Talib Kwali taking over the turntables. There I met the instamous (infamous + Instagram) stylists @JayStrut and @caitlynmi of CM Styling Co. We bonded over twerking, politeness, and fur. Follow me on Instagram @CarmenBelcher
…every time I see this bag it is worn so inappropriately that it must be laid to rest. Immediately!
I admit, I once thought it was cute. #TBT I loved the hardware straps and detailing — but after purchasing a pair of over the knee boots from Stella in 2012 I don’t do her vegan leather. But this is hardly the problem.
The problem I find is that some clueless women, most notably “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast member Brandi Glanville, wear this particular bag TO DEATH, pairing it with sexy mini-dresses while party hopping in the nightclubs or going to dinner at fancy restaurants. THIS IS NOT AN EVENING BAG! And it’s not that cute. And it completely covers up your outfit, your weight loss, and your gender identity.
Besides, we are now in the era of structured bags so please, it is time to get with the program.
I predicted this trend 4 years ago when actor Isaiah Washington, a former styling client of mine, sent me to LA for a job and introduced me to the wondrous world of thrifting in Venice Beach where I surprisingly did all of my winter coat shopping that year. (I guess Californians had no need for their coats anymore so I scored big!) It’s where I found the brightly coloured plaid faux fur Donny Brook oversized coat, pictured below, I used for a test shoot I recently styled for Marylin models. As loud and crazy as it was, I knew I had to have it. Thanks, Isaiah!! Two years ago, I wore the coat once to meet international fashion week favorite male model Fernando Cabral at the old Darby nightclub, now renamed Up & Down, and he took one look at me and said, “Ahhh Carmen, you look so American!” in his heavy Portuguese accent. I took it as a compliment
A few years later, brightly coloured authentic furs have emerged in luxuary collections from European designers like Karl Lagerfeld for Fendi, Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, and Joseph Altuzzara whose coat featured here from todays Altuzzara Ready-to-Wear Fall NYFW 2014 show, is a higher-end version of mine. When this happens during New York Fashion Week in vain it always makes me wonder, “Was I the inspiration behind this similarly styled piece?” Perhaps I’ll never know.
